The temples of Khajuraho are the construction of more than
a century. During that time Khajuraho was the capitol of the
Bargurjar Branch called Chandela Rajputs. They started the construction
of the temples. The whole area of Khajuraho was surrounded by
a wall that was eight doors. Each of the doors of the region
was flanked by two large palm trees gold. In fact, there were
more than 80 Hindu temples in Khajuraho. But among the 80 temples
only 22 have survived the test of time. These temples are still
at a stage that can be restored. The temples of Khajuraho unlike
all other well-known Hindu temples in India have never suffered
mass destruction. The temples have the finest example of ancient
architectural style of India and stand as the incarnation of
clever know- how. On the walls of the temple you can find wonderful
sculptures that provide information about the lifestyle in medieval
times in India. The temples also have erotic sculptures on the
exterior walls. But none of these erotic sculptures can be found
inside the temple or near the deities. It is usually a misconception
that the temples of Khajuraho represent sexual contact between
deities. But it actually is not the case. No deities are presented
in sexual acts in any of the temples of Khajuraho. There are
many interpretations of erotic sculptures. According to popular
belief the sculptures on the external wall of the temples means
that we must leave the sexual desires to enter behind the brick
of God. Some sculptures speak of Tantric sexual acts that were
practiced at that time. Some even say that in those days, young
men used to practice Bramhacharya and before entering the family
life they used to take lessons from these encrypted sculpture
in the walls of temples of Khajuraho. Anther popular theory
is that people at that time believed that the god of thunder
will not destroy the place guarded by persons involved in sexual
acts and sculptures were made outside the temple to guard against
any type of destruction.. These unusual sculptures in Khajuraho
temples were discovered in the late 19th century of the jungle
and were restored as a wonderful tourist destination in India.
